Pearl BuckPearl Buck was an American writer. In 1931, her book The Good Earth was the top selling book in the United States. The next year, she won the Pulitzer Prize. In 1938, Buck won the Nobel Prize in Literature. She was the first American woman to win it. She wrote more than one hundred books. China was her home for almost 40 years. Her mother and a Chinese teacher taught her at home. Later, she lived in a small village in China with her husband. The people there were very poor. She wrote many books about their lives. The Good Earth is about a poor Chinese man, Wang Lung, and his wife, O-Lan. They work very hard and buy some land. Later, Buck went back to the United States. She wrote for newspapers and talked to young people about school. She died in 1973, at the age of 80.
