Coming to NorwayI came to Norway with my two brothers in December 2016. We wore summer clothes because we thought Norway was warm like Somalia. But when we arrived at the airport, it was snowing. We were very cold. Our suitcases only had summer clothes in them. I was still very happy. Finally, I could see my mum again after six years. My mum and two of her friends met us. When we saw her, we cried with joy. Then we drove to the small town where she lives. The first days in Mum’s town were very strange. The streets were empty. The few people I met seemed cold and unfriendly. In Somalia there were people everywhere. My mum and her friends gave us some presents. Then she took us to buy winter clothes. After Christmas, I started a Norwegian course at the adult education centre. Two years later, I started at an ordinary school. Now I am in my last year, and I have many friends. After school, I go to a centre where volunteers help me with my homework. I also learn sewing there. In Somalia, I only went to Quran school. I could not read or write. Now I can write in Somali and in Norwegian. Without school, I felt I was nobody. Now I am happy. Next year I will start secondary school. In the future I want to be a youth worker. My dream is to get a permanent job and learn to drive. I think that in Somalia I would be a mother now. I feel lucky to live in Norway.
