How to Keep a Betta FishBetta fish have bright colors, and many Americans keep them as pets. Males have the strongest colors. With good care, these fish can live three to five years, and some live for 10 years. Keeping one is a nice thing to do in winter, when people stay inside. It does not need much skill, but you must be ready to learn. First, your fish needs a tank. It should hold at least 11 liters of water, but 19 is better. Put a thin layer of small stones or sand on the bottom. Wash them in clean water first. Next, get a filter to keep the water clean, and a heater. These fish like warm water, between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius. You can also add plants and other things, but make sure they are safe for fish. Water from the tap usually has a chemical in it that is bad for fish. Pet shops sell products that make this water safe. Many fish shops will also test your water for you. Feed your fish once or twice a day. Its food should have meat or insects in it. Every week or two, change a quarter of the water. Keep a male betta alone. Males like to fight, and they often attack other fish. Females can live with other fish in peace.
